This last Wednesday, on a cold and crisp March night, a line began forming outside the recently opened Marquis venue in Park City, Utah. The headliner, Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners, had drawn a devoted crowd eager for a night of folk-rock bliss. With the opening of the doors, the audience shuffled in, all vying for the closest spot to the stage. There seemed to be one problem, in between the crowd and Richy Mitch & The Coal Miners set was the opener. This turned out to be no problem at all as the audience was treated to a talent-filled opening set from Briscoe, a duo hailing from Austin, Texas.

Stephen Day’s Gold Mine Tour stop on March 25th at the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City was a show that I’d been looking forward to since the day that it was announced! I have been listening to him for the past few years and have been able to see him open for Ben Rector and Stephen Sanchez, but I was more than ready for a full set of Stephen Day music!

It was a great night at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City, with two extremely talented songwriters co-headlining the historic venue.  Singer-songwriter John Craigie and frontman for Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips, made their Utah stop on their brief seven-city tour.  At first, I was surprised to see these two on the same bill.  I know Craggie as a solo artist, and I am mainly only familiar with Phillips’ work with Toad.  But the show was a great blend of great songs and humor.

mxmtoon pronounced (em-ex-em-toon) took the stage at a sold-out show at Soundwell in Salt Lake City on a Friday night. mxmtoon opened for AJR last year in July in Salt Lake City and is back this year headlining her own liminal space tour. She brought singer-songwriter Juliet Ivy along. I have never been to Soundwell so I was excited to see the space and feel the atmosphere. I walked into the venue and the first thing that I noticed was how packed it was. mxmtoon merch covered the shirts of many and the venue was loud.

Last Thursday, Salt Lake City welcomed beloved indie band Flipturn to The Complex! The last time they played in Utah was at Kilby Court! It was so heartwarming to see them jump to a nearly sold-out show with thousands more fans. I’ve been a huge fan of Flipturn for the past year or two, so there was no chance I was missing this show. There were older and younger fans and they came prepared in their merch, ready to sing their hearts out. I saw many of my friends at this show, and it’s always lovely to connect with them over our shared love of music.

When I received the announcement that Heart’s Royal Flush Tour would need to be postponed due to lead singer, Ann Wilson’s cancer diagnosis, I wondered if I’d ever get to see Heart in concert again. More important than the band, the music, and the tour, I hoped that Wilson would fully recover. Cancer is such a scary thing, and well, you just never know. I was delighted to hear see the rescheduled dates and see that Heart would be returning to Utah in 2025.

For 40 years, Dream Theater has been making music and playing shows all over the world. On March 4th, 2025, they made their way to the Maverick Center in West Valley City, Utah. This massive venue, home to many legendary performances and even the Winter Olympics in 2002, seemed to be the perfect spot for this reunion tour. With the big sound of the band, mixed with the arena setting, it seemed that there could be no other place for Dream Theater to make their return to Utah.
